If service is the beating heart of Rotary, then the Rotary Foundation is its lifeblood. It is in and through the Foundation that we are able to support projects locally and throughout the world. It is through the Foundation that Rotary is made real in the lives of millions working for peace, supporting clean water and sanitation projects, providing for maternal and child health programs. This is all a result of Rotarians throughout the world generously sharing their resources.
NOMINATIONS from the floor for Officers and Directors for Rotary Year 2019-2020 were held by Nominating Committee Chairman, Immediate Past President Ken McGrath. There being no nominations from the floor, the slate of Officers and Directors for Rotary Year 2019-2020 was unanimously acclaimed elected by the membership.
31st ANNUAL THANKSGIVING EVENT Rotarian Sol Bravman's repeated his request for Rotarians to help meet the need to raise $5000 to cover the Ballroom, lunch for 400, and entertainment for the Event held on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, in the La Concha Hotel. ROTARIANS FROM DISTRICT 6900's Rotary Club of Peach Tree City, Georgia, headed by President Mike Nelson, joined us for lunch last week. We thank them for the generous $54,000 contribution to the Souns Puerto Rico Program for children's early education.
Guest speaker, Alfredo Castellanos, Lawyer, Philanthropist and Scholar, gave a comprehensive talk on the very much in the news, 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. We learned that before the Civil War there was no specific reference to citizenship. With reconstruction came the need for a new birth of freedom for the nation. First came the 13tth Amendment, abolishing slavery. Then, the14th Amendment granting citizenship to all persons born in the United States. Our speaker noted that the 14th Amendment is the most cited and used amendment in our Constitution, even in modern day America. Currently, the constitutional and legal advisor to the Federal District Court with his background of special programs in mediation and negotiation from Harvard Law School, he is most proud of his extensive pro-bono work and associations with youth centers in Bayamon and Arecibo and creating a scholarship fund for economically disadvantaged law school students.
