PROGRAM: A group of students from Commonwealth HS and Robinson HS Interact Clubs will be bringing us up-to-date on their activities. Interact Clubs are service clubs for youths, founded by Rotary International in 1962, There are over 200,000 youths in 19,000 Rotary clubs in 109 countries. While self supporting and self governing, they also receive direction for the sponsoring Rotary Club. Each Interact Club must sponsor a minimum of two community service project annually. Service Projects Director, Denis Vaz, will be moderating our program.
New Rotarian, Jillian Carmichael gave an interesting talk on the multi-faceted gold mining industry. China, Australia, Russia, the US, Peru and South Africa have the largest working mines. The planets Mars, Mercury and Venus are thought to have gold. Back to Earth, 166,000 tons of gold have been mined with 80% still buried underground. Our neighbor, the Dominican Republic, mined 1,155 tons in 2014. Puerto Rico’s gold mines were depleted by 1570. The ore is drilled and blasted, crushed, leached and poured to make the beautiful metal we so covet. Rotarian Jillian, a native of Hawaii and a graduate from the U of Hawaii at Manoa, has lived and worked in Santiago Chile and later in Denver, Colorado where she is Director of Global Marketing for Cyanco International, a chemical producer to the gold mining industry.
She moved to Puerto Rico two years ago and continues to work in global marketing for Cyanco from San Juan. Jillian was brought to us by fellow-member Ken McGrath, who is also her father-in-law.
More than a decade ago, a chubby preteen named Hector Tanco tearfully thanked San Juan Rotarians for their support and the opportunity to attend Robinson School as a Rotary Scholarship recipient. Today, the former Llorens Torres resident is named among the Who's Who of American University and College Students. Hector attends Mississippi College where he is receiving highest honors. This bright young man was mentored by our Past Pres and District Governor John Richardson, who helped Hector along for many years and whose family embraced both Hector and his struggling single mother who raised him. Congratulations to Hector, John Richardson and our Club for exemplary effort!
Well almost. But our endeared President Jorge participated in the recent Half Ironman event and achieved his goal. The grueling cruise that included long distance biking/swimming/running and a few mishaps did not keep our stalwart leader from reaching the finish line. Congratulations, Jorge!
