Dear Rotarians, On Tuesday during our lunch meeting we will host the official visit of the District Governor, Luz Myriam Ortiz, who will share with us her vision on how to strengthen clubs and achieve goals. DG Luz Myriam will come with her husband, PDG Paul Roman, and Area One Assistant Governor, Luis Nieves. This Tuesday’s Zoom meeting offered a truly inspiring cultural experience. We had the honor of hearing from renowned Puerto Rican sculptor Nilda Comas, who joined us live from Pietrasanta, Italy, where she is currently creating the Pablo Casals Peace Monument for Muñoz Rivera Park in San Juan.
Nilda shared her artistic journey, her passion for representing Puerto Rico through monumental works, and her reflections on the creative process behind the Casals sculpture — a piece that will symbolize peace and the unifying power of music. Members were captivated by her stories from Pietrasanta, known as the “City of Marble,” and by her dedication to preserving Puerto Rican culture through art.
In addition to her work on the Pablo Casals Peace Monument, Ms. Comas is internationally acclaimed for her large-scale figurative sculpture in marble and bronze — most notably her statue of Mary McLeod Bethune for the U.S. Capitol’s National Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C. This historic commission made her the first Puerto Rican-born artist to create a statue for the U.S. Capitol. The piece, carved from Carrara marble sourced from the same quarry used by Michelangelo, includes deeply symbolic elements such as the black rose and an open book of knowledge, representing unity and education.
Through her work, Nilda Comas continues to elevate Puerto Rico’s artistic legacy on the world stage — blending classical craftsmanship, human dignity, and cultural identity to inspire peace across nations.
