Once again, our members were key players in an important phase of Rotary: Leadership Development. Last Saturday, Aug. 18, our District held the RLI (Rotary Leadership Institute) in the facilities of Robinson School in Condado area. Various members of our club took very active participation and our DG Juanita Valentín-Morris was really pleased with the participation.
The RLI is a multi-district, grassroots leadership development program of member districts organized into regional divisions throughout the world. It was recommended by the Rotary International Board of Directors and strongly endorsed by the Council on Legislation at three of their triennial meetings. RLI conducts a series of quality leadership development courses for potential club officers and all other club members, including those who have recently joined a Rotary Club. The courses emphasize both leadership skills and knowledge of Rotary around the world. All course sessions are interactive. RLI believes that leadership education has a positive impact on membership retention by creating enthusiasm and furthering engagement for Rotary.
Let continue supporting this initiative that strengthens the skills of our leaders.

Five Rotarians received their Paul Harris certificate and lapel pins: Ricardo Betancourt, Antonio Colorado, John Dillon, Bruno Mazza and Amaury Rivera. Receiving his 4th Paul Harris Award was Juan Woodroffe.
San Juan Rotary was well represented at the recently held Rotary Leadership Institute where new ideas and Rotary International objectives are reviewed and discussed.
Carmen Delia Sanchez Salgado, Ph.D., Ombudsman for Puerto Rico's Office for the Elderly since 2013, retired professor and author with degrees from Hunter College and UPR, shared many interesting statistics on aging in Puerto Rico. Of the 65 and over population, 44% depend on Social Security as their main income with 88% not working. The elderly is the fastest growing group. Professor Sanchez also reflected on the low birth rate on the island. She described the laws that protect the aging and establish their rights.to health care, education, financial aid transportation among others Our speaker said that any abuse of the elderly or suspected fraud, should be reported to the police and to her office at 787-721-6121.
