March 8 marks the international women’s day and we would like to extend to all our female fellow Rotarians our most sincere appreciation to all their efforts and contributions. They illustrate the power of women to change the world and improve people’s lives though innovative and impactful projects in education, economic development and health. The 1989 Council on Legislation vote to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide remains a watershed moment in the history of Rotary.
Actually, the District 7000 Governor, Juanita Valentín-Morris, is a distinguished Rotarian from our Club and we are very proud of all the excellent work she is doing.

To Rotarian LANCE BRILLIANTINE who choreographed for the Ballet of San Juan, the performances to be shown this Friday and Saturday, March 8 & 9, at the Tapia Theater in Old San Juan. The show is at 8 pm. His ballet is one of several that will be shown and is part of the 65th anniversary of the Ballet of San Juan. Lance thanks Rotary for supporting mosquito spraying and refurbishment of the Ballet's headquarters on Avenida Ponce de Leon. He hopes to see many fellow Rotarians at the ballet on Friday and Saturday.
San Juan Rotary welcomed two new Rotarians: ALFREDO CASTELLANOS BAYOUTH, owner of the Castellanos Group Law Firm, sponsored by President Jose M. Rivero Olmedo and EUGENE S. SMOTKIN, CEO of NuVant Systems, with offices in San Juan and Crown Point, Indiana. Gene was sponsored by Past President John Richardson.
Fellow Rotarian, Past President of San Juan Rotary and former Secretary of Health for Puerto Rico, DR. JOHNNY RULLAN, gave a fact-filled report on the Opioid epidemic affecting the U.S. population. The figures for the spread of the addiction and the subsequent deaths are astoundingly high. Many of these drugs started out as prescriptions for pain relief but quickly spread to substance abuse. It was interesting to note that Fentanyl, one of the most sought-after opioids that is 50 times more potent than morphine, is coming from the Dominican Republic. The good news is the public's growing awareness of this health and life destroying epidemic and hopefully some strong measures to educate the population will be successful.
