Our once-a-month get acquainted speaker was our Past President (2007-08) Dr. Norman Maldonado, After UPR School of Medicine & residency in Internal Medicine & Hematology, Norman served in the US Army in Germany.  Returning to Puerto Rico, he began his career in public health service.  In 1994, Norman was nominated as President of the University of Puerto Rico, a position he held to 2001.  San Juan Rotary celebrated its 90th anniversary during his year as president.  As he said in his inaugural speech, he was very proud to preside over one of the most distinguished organizations in Puerto Rico where dedicated businessmen and women, professionals from all disciplines and all nationalities felt it was the right vehicle to serve our community and join in the efforts to help others all over the world.

LAST WEEK

Speaker Frederick Pfaeffle, appointee to the President’s Task Force on Puerto Rico, spoke on the 3.5 million Americans living here in the midst of an economic and fiscal crisis.  The Deputy Assistant Secretary of Civil Rights at the USDA, said the USDA has expanded its StrikeForce to Puerto Rico.  Through StrikeForce efforts, USDA has invested over $20 billion to date throughout designated regions of need to stimulate chronic rural economies and will work feeding children, assisting farmers, securing safe homes and conserving natural resources.  The USDA is also working in collaboration with other federal agencies to coordinate and enhance access to federal programs for Puerto Rico as part of the President’s Task Force on Puerto Rico.  Mr. Pfaeffle was born in Mexico City from Nicaraguan parents.  He moved to Miami for high school, became a U.S. citizen, attended the U of Florida and law school at the U of Southern California.  In Los Angeles County, he was Deputy Counsel responsible for legal work in the areas of public works, solid and hazardous waste and water. He was appointed to his present position in 2013.
