Past President of San Juan Rotary and of the University of Puerto Rico, NORMAN MALDONADO, MD, introduced guest speaker, DR. JORGE HADDOCK, the current and 20th President of the U of Puerto Rico. Dr. Haddock, a native of Caguas, PR, career in academia, includes leadership roles at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the U of Richmond George Mason U, and the U of Massachusetts in Boston. Author of more than a hundred publications over a wide spectrum of topics, he has been awarded more than $5 million dollars in research funding. With the title of his talk, "A Major Network University System", President Haddock gave an overview of the scope of learning centers available at UPR to the more than 52,000 students. Through its medical and engineering centers, the university has had a major economic impact. UPR's social impact includes 80% free tuition, and five hospitals providing health services for 100,000 patients yearly Our speaker is presently working with transforming the university into a new financial model. Dr. Haddock asked the audience how many had gone to UPR. There was a large raising of hands. Following his talk, a lively Q & A period ensued.
