WITH VISITING ROTARIAN SCOTT LECKMAN, MD, of the Rotary Club of Salt Lake City, Utah. Scott is also a Past Governor of Rotary District 5420. His club celebrated its 100th Anniversary.
With the title of his talk, "Puerto Rico: The Country We Want And Deserve", as his theme, guest speaker MANUEL CIDRE, gave reasons of why he decided to be a candidate for Governor, as an Independent (no political party affiliation) in 2016. (1) was to raise the bar to a serious and responsible level; not based on empty phrases and rhetoric. For the first time in a Puerto Rico political campaign, we heard the traditional candidates talking about productivity, efficiency, how to eliminate unnecessary expenses, the public education system, and more. (2) To bring new players to the political arena. (3) Increase a strong electoral force to send the right message to the establishment, that the people are demanding a new way of doing politics and a new way of governance, based on inclusion, participation and results. With over 90,000 voting for him, the goal was over his expectations.
Our speaker, founder of Los Cidrines, a leader in baking manufacturing, holds a BBA from Catholic U of PR. He has held many leadership positions over the years and is presently Chairman of the Board on the Puerto Rico Pediatric Hospital Foundation, and Por Los Nuestros Foundation. Board Member of SER of PR and on the Board of Trustees of Catholic University of Puerto Rico.
Recipient of many Community Awards, Mr. Cidre called upon all of us to make Puerto Rico a rich, democratic, honest, empowered and responsible country based on hard work, to fight against poverty and inequality. An educated, safe place of opportunity that cares for the elderly and protects children. A country seeking to have the best quality of life in the world.
