We want to thank the Boys & Girls Clubs of Puerto Rico specially Olga I. Ramos, President and Mildred V. Antuna, Executive for sharing these beautiful moments with the community through their acknowledgment in the newspaper El Nuevo Día. For over 30 years we have extended our hands and collaboration to make of this occasion, Thanksgiving, an unforgettable experience to these kids.
Next Tuesday, Dec. 18, we will celebrate our Christmas lunch. We expect to have your company in this special occasion. We will resume our meetings on Jan 15, 2019.
In the meantime, may the spirit of Christmas guide your hearts just as the Wise Men were guided by the Star!!!
Originator of Teatro Por Amor, a program that encourages, develops and brings interest in the arts to young people on the island, recently received a Global Grant from Rotary International. We viewed a video showing the progress of the project our Club is sponsoring.
Presented a video showing an overview of the hands-on successes and changes for the long-term recovery after the Hurricane Maria disaster. One example of the Army's assistance was the over 12,000 meals served affecting all age groups, especially to the children. As the Major said, "The Salvation Army is forever united with Puerto Rico."
Guest speaker, Luis Gonzalez Vales, Official Historian of Puerto Rico and Brigadier General (Retired) in the US Army, gave a fact-filled history of the office he now holds. His position dates to March 12, 1903 (the same date UPR was created by law). Not surprisingly, well-known Puerto Ricans were among previous holders of his position. Francisco Mariano, Salvador Brau, Cayetano Coll y Toste, Adolfo de Hostos, Pilar Barbosa de Rosario (the 1st woman to occupy the position), were so honored. The history goes back to the discovery in 1493 by Columbus, our Spanish heritage, our Indian culture, the abolition of slavery, our US connection on to the present day. Each official historian investigated and added to the knowledge of our heritage. Mr. Gonzalez Vales holds a Master's Degree from Columbia University and he has represented Puerto Rico at many history conferences world-wide. The Humanist of the Year was awarded to him by the Puerto Rico Endowment for the Humanities in 1999, for his substantial contributions to the humanities through his life and work. Thanks to Rotarian Ricardo Betancourt for bringing us this fine program.
