Dear Rotarians,
Speaker via zoom next week: Arq. Andy Rivera, founder and president of the Puerto Rico Historic Buildings Drawings Society, will be our speaker at our Zoom luncheon on Tuesday September 23 explaining the important role of his organization in preserving and promoting Puerto Rico’s major architectural/historical infrastructure and how our Club can profit from their numerous tours, especially in Old San Juan. Feel free to invite family and friends to this very interesting presentation.
At our breakfast meeting of this week Jorge González explained the background and goals of “el Proyecto Rotario ProPaz” addressing violence in all of its manifestations and at three levels: (1) tools for managing violence and promoting peace on a day-to-day basis; (2) collaborations with others to achieve our goals; and (3) the roots of violence. He went over the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals as the framework for addressing the roots of violence that are totally compatible with the 7 priorities of Rotary International. He also went over our service projects for this year which are in line with el Proyecto Rotario PRoPaz.
Sal Nolfo explained the student video contest on the topic of managing anger and is asking us to promote the contest among students ages 14 to 18. Sylvia Fernandez explained the concept of “Gentle Teaching” on which she has written a book and given numerous seminars in Puerto Rico and throughout the world. The student video contest and the Gentle Teaching concept are two excellent examples of tools we are providing to promote peace and address violence along with our multiple service projects. The three presentations were an informal dialogue among those present.
Breakfast meetings celebrated on the second Tuesday of each month at AFDA is an experiment. Besides the early morning hour (8:30-9:30), the meetings will normally be led by San Juan Rotarians discussing informally Rotary challenges, goals and projects. The first Tuesday is lunch at AFDA; the third Tuesday is an evening fellowship activity at diverse locations; and the fourth Tuesday is a Zoom mid-day meeting. The first and third Tuesday meetings will be with speakers. When there is a fifth Tuesday, as in September and December, we will try to have an interesting offsite visit for that day. Please mark your calendars accordingly.
