This past week we were fortunate to have Rotarian PDG Shab El Awar and his wife, President Bricia of the San Bernardino Sunset Club, visit with us for a full week.Shab and Bricia travel the world for Rotary spreading their knowledge about Global Grants. They made Puerto Rico their third stop on their trip, previously visiting Nepal and Mexico.Shab was kind enough to spend an afternoon with members of the Relief Committee and a few board members to guide us through the process of obtaining the funding for a Global Grant. They also signed an agreement with our club to become “sister clubs” providing support and guidance to us to process future Global Grants. Our club has several potential projects which would qualify for matched funding from other Rotary clubs and Rotary International including water supply and purification, education, and training.RI has identified six areas of focus which would allow a project to be considered for a Global Grant. They are:Promoting Peace; Fighting Disease; Providing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene; Saving mothers and children; Supporting Education: and Growing Local Economies. Our club will be focusing on projects in these areas of focus as we transition from providing immediate help to the neediest of communities in Puerto Rico, to projects that will be sustainable over a longer period of time.
Was held in memory of the Mother and Father of Rotarian Vilma Colon. Both parents passed away earlier this month. Our thoughts and prayers are with Vilma and her family.
Past District 5330 Governor, Shab El Awar, and his wife Bricia, President of the San Bernardino, California Rotary Club, were in Puerto Rico to give San Juan Rotary's Hurricane Relief Fund a $13,000 donation. PDG Shab El Awar also gave a two-hour seminar covering Rotary International's Global Grants Program. Accompanying the California Rotarians were members of our Club.
Invited guest speaker, Alejandro Salvatore, showed great enthusiasm as he led us through his career as a successful restaurant owner. Owner/operator of Boca and Acapulco on Loiza Street and Acapulco in the Banco Popular Center, Hato Rey, he has plans to bring Bocca to Dorado. Sancho has spent much time in Mexico where he played professional soccer and learned to appreciate the local cuisine. Our young businessman can claim his Rome, Italy, dad for his Italian cooking skills Another innovative program thanks to Speaker Chairman, Warwick Butler.
